Are your dentures leaving a bad taste in your mouth? Maybe they’re giving off an offensive odor? Although smelly dentures are a common problem, your chompers aren’t supposed to stink. Here’s what is causing the smell and what you can do to stop it.
Bacteria Cause Denture Odors
Bacteria is the culprit of smelly dentures. Food residue and plaque can accumulate on your dentures throughout the day, which feeds harmful oral bacteria. While you might think you’re getting your dentures clean by brushing them, there may be trapped bacteria left behind.
Although dentures look smooth, they are porous. Bacteria can get trapped in the pores, leading to unpleasant odors. Not to mention, bacteria can damage your dentures over time, causing you to need replacements sooner.
How to Prevent Denture Odors
You can keep your dentures odor-free and your breath minty fresh by following a few tips:
- Brush Your Dentures Daily: Your dentures can’t get cavities, but they still need to be brushed at least once a day. However, don’t use abrasive dental products because they can scratch your dentures, trapping bacteria in the crevices. It’s best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild hand soap or dishwashing liquid to clean them.
- Rinse After Eating: Always remove and rinse your dentures after eating to remove food debris.
- Don’t Sleep with Your Dentures: No one wants to be caught without their teeth, but don’t sleep with them in your mouth. Not only do your gums need a break, but your mouth is a hotspot for oral bacteria growth at night because it is dark and moist. It’s best to take your dentures out and clean them before heading to bed.
- Use an Overnight Soaking Solution: While you’re getting the rest you need, soak your dentures in an overnight solution. A denture cleaning solution will kill 99% of bacteria in hard-to-reach places.
Visit Your Dentures Regularly
Besides keeping your dentures clean, it’s important to visit your dentist every 6 months for a checkup. They’ll keep your mouth healthy and help you get the most out of your dentures. They’ll give them a good cleaning and ensure a snug fit with regular relining.
With the right habits at home and regular dental care, you won’t have to worry about smelly dentures.
