Meet Dr. Yumi Ogata

Dr. Derek Song is honored to introduce you to our gum and implant surgeon – Dr. Yumi Ogata.

Dr. Ogata is a periodontal specialist, which means she has extensive additional training and is certified in Periodontics and Dental Implantology and Implant Surgery. We are so excited to have Dr. Ogata in our practice and we know that patients will love the specialized care she brings to our office.

We would also like to congratulate Dr. Yumi Ogata for being this year’s recipient of the Ralph McKinney Outstanding Manuscript Award from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. This is a prestigious award given for the most outstanding research article published in Implant Dentistry. We’re so proud to have Dr. Yumi Ogata on our team as our implant surgeon and implant specialist. Way to go, Dr. Ogata!

What is a Periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist with an additional 3 years of specialized training focused on gum health. This type of dentist is trained to help you manage all phases of periodontal (gum) disease.

Periodontists work to protect the foundations and support structures of your teeth such as your gums and jawbone, which are attacked and eventually destroyed if gum disease is not successfully managed. A periodontist may recommend a deep cleaning, antibiotic therapy, or gum grafting surgery for patients with more advanced cases of gum disease.

Periodontists are also able to help patients manage tooth loss, as they are trained to surgically place dental implants into the jawbone. A periodontist is an excellent choice for implant placement surgery as they specialize in bone health.

Dr. Ogata Is Here for You

Dr. Ogata shares Dr. Song’s strong commitment to providing exceptional dental care to their patients, and this is why we are thrilled that she’s joined our practice.

She studied in Japan, and even worked with her father who is also a dentist, before coming to Boston to attend Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and complete her Doctor of Dental Medicine and a postgraduate periodontal residency. She has also served as an assistant professor at Tufts since 2013, as well as the Director of the honors program in periodontology and implant surgery for senior dental students since 2015.
